Cake
As I lay here in search of sleep
And fairy kingdoms far and deep
Within my mind, this stomach pain
Assures me all my efforts vain.
The ache seems proof of my mistake,
Until the vision of that cake
Returns. Tempting aroma fills
My nose, and all my former ills
Are gone. The frosting, white and creamy
With coconut so light and dreamy,
Rolls in my head, as on my tongue
Those thick, sweet waves earlier hung.
They carry me to younger days
When dirty face and piggish ways
Brought simple pleasure. Complex scenes
Now seem made to confuse my means
To happiness. But, with a smile
I recall how I blew off style
And reveled in my piggish sin –
I crammed that luscious mountain in!
Content, I hold my splitting seams
And find the world of gentle dreams.
