How is it that people still don’t get this? If you are a white American living in a fairly homogeneously white community it is shamefully easy for you to remain clueless that there are two very different Americas:  one for white Americans and one for black Americans.  This has been true from the time black people were first forcibly brought to this country in chains, and it sadly remains largely true still. Our failure to come to terms with this truth and with racism generally, is one of our greatest failings as a nation.

Please check out this article in Upworthy by Jon Comulada about a statement made by Malcolm X in 1964 regarding the attitude of police in black communities, notable Harlem. At the time of this interview, Harlem was, and remains, a community of black American families across a wide spectrum of socio-economic class.  It is sadly still relevant to black communities, which are American communities, across the country.
